Rare in a range filled with couloirs, the NE Face of Horstmann Peak (AKA The Shield) sticks out like a sore thumb on the approach to the Williams Peak Hut. It has pitches of 55 degrees hanging above a cliff. Connecting the upper face to the lower apron takes some creative thinking and a rope. Since it’s a rare year when the snow clinging to the face isn’t deceptive rotten sugar snow over rock, it’s only been skied a few times,
