A stormy late winter left a deep blanket of snow in the Sawtooths that has been slow to melt. But recent warm weather has melted a lot of the snow and many trail are open and passable!
We’ve been out and about in the mountains and here’s a report of what we’ve found:
- Saddleback Lakes: trail is melted out except for the usual snowfield as you near the first lake. This is a challenging spot because any slip will put you into the fast moving creek. We’ve been going up there, but we bring an axe to chop steps and a rope to secure guests. The lakes are thawed.
- Elephants Perch: We’ve been climbing the Perch and most routes are dry. There is some snow near the top and on the descent.
- Alpine Lake (Redfish Canyon): Trail is mostly melted out except for one section below the lake. The lake just recently thawed.
- Sawtooth Lake: trail is almost completely melted out to Alpine Lake. There is snow between Alpine and Sawtooth Lakes, but it is easily negotiated. Sawtooth Lake was still partially frozen as of July 1st – see photo below.
- Goat Lake: trail is mostly melted out except for a few snow patches as you approach the lake.
Above 8000′, expect to begin encountering snow patches, especially in shady areas. Most of the high passes are still snowed in.
Our half and full day rock climbing programs are in full swing, as are our hiking, peak climbing, and Rock-n-Raft combo trips. If you’re looking for something fun to do over your 4th of July holiday, give us a jingle!
In other news: Sawtooth Mountain Guides has opened a new office/headquarters in the Stanley Town Square (map). If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and say hi!
