Essential Self-Rescue for Rock Climbers

Learn essential techniques for handling mid-route rock climbing emergencies.

Do you know what to do? If not this class is for you. Learn how to escape the belay, get to an injured leader (or follower), and execute the necessary techniques to descend to the ground with the equipment you normally carry for a multi-pitch climb.

Teaching topics include:

  • Essential knots and hitches
  • Escaping the belay
  • Rope ascension
  • Raising systems
  • Counterbalance and tandem rappels
  • Lowering and passing knots
  • Activating and/or working with organized SAR and EMS

 Difficulty: Previous climbing experience recommended

 Duration: 2 days

 Meeting Time: 9am

 What We Provide:

  • All technical climbing equipment (shoes, harness, helmet, belay device, carabiners). Discount packages can be purchased at Backwoods Mountain Sports in Ketchum.

 What You Need:

  • Basic outdoor clothing and footwear
  • Small day pack
  • Lunch
  • Lodging or camping arrangements
  • Review the equipment list

Ratio: 4:1

 Rates: $220/person (based on 3 person minimum)
