This course is designed for established single-pitch leaders interested in stepping up to multi-pitch routes. It is primarily a ground-based course with instructional topics and demo/practice sessions. The overall focus is to impart intermediate to advanced risk management skills and introduce best practice techniques for multi-pitch climbing and improvised rescue.

Day 1
- Welcome and introductions
- Base etiquette and LNT (Leave No Trace)
- Multi-pitch and rescue gear overview
- Belay devices and methods for multi-pitch
- Station/rope managements and transitions (swapping leaders)
- Multi-pitch rappelling
- Planning and packing for multi-pitch
Day 2
- Toolbox approach to rescue and gear
- Friction hitches and knots
- The munter/mule/overhand
- Lowers and raises
- Tandem rappels
- Avoiding accidents
Recommended Experience/Prerequisites:
- Completion of SMG’s Introduction to Trad
- Already leading sport climbs or trad climbs – 20 outdoor leads
- Experience belaying a leader
- Can top rope up to 5.8

What We Provide:
- American Mountain Guide Association (AMGA) certified and/or trained instructors, operating within industry accepted scope of practice. SMG is an accredited guide service.
- Recently revamped curriculum to reflect best practices for managing risk in recreational climbing
- If needed, SMG can provide all necessary equipment. See the equipment list for recommended gear for each instructional program.
