Traveling Light Sawtooth Hiking Trip

Imagine carrying only a light backpack while hiking through some of the best scenery of the Sawtooths!

Want to go backpacking without the heavy backpack? Then our 3 or 4-Day Traveling Light Sawtooth Hiking Trip is your dream come true. Enjoy some of the best scenery the Sawtooths have to offer while we carry the heavy stuff!

Hiking 5-10 miles each day with your friendly and knowledgeable guide, you’ll arrive at camp each night to find the camping gear waiting for you. Your guide will whip up dinner while you relax at the edge of an alpine lake or cast a line. After a hearty breakfast in the morning, you’ll leave your camping gear right where it is and hit the trail – again with a light pack!

Our incredible itinerary will take you through the heart of the Sawtooth range connecting valleys, high passes, and alpine basins with new vistas around every corner. Each night, fall asleep listening to a burbling creek or seeing the glimmering reflection of the moon on an alpine lake. And as a certified International Dark Sky Reserve, spending a night under the Sawtooth stars is a one-of-a-kind experience!

If you want to cover some ground without carrying all the gear, this is the trip for you! This is also a great option for kids ready to experience the outdoors but groan at the idea of carrying a big backpack.

Our itinerary:

Day 1: Starting at Redfish Lake, we will either hike from the far end of the lake to our outfitter camp on Redfish Lake Creek or take the shuttle across Redfish lake to shorten our hike and allow for more relaxation time at camp. We’ll watch the last rays of the day hit the Elephants Perch as the sun sets. 2.5 – 8 miles.

Day 2: Get ready for a big day of high mountain passes and stunning vistas. From our camp, we’ll hike up to Alpine Lakes and over the pass to the Baron Lakes on the west side of the Sawtooths. We’ll camp for the night on Baron Lake and enjoy the stunning mountain cirques. 6 miles.

Day 3: From our camp at Baron Lakes we will hike down Baron Creek, passing Baron Creek falls, on our way to the old mountain town of Grandjean. During our hike we’ll pass through many ecological zones, starting in the alpine and ending in Ponderosa pine forests. 11 Miles.

If you are doing a 4 day trip, we will spend our 3rd day hiking around and exploring all that Baron Lakes has to offer.
