Chris holds an MS degree in Snow Science from Montana State University and worked as a snow researcher, ski patrol, and avalanche forecaster for 15 years. He was lured to Idaho to work as a forecaster with the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, eventually becoming the center director. In the summer, he’s worked as a wilderness ranger and as a river guide on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. Chris guides with SMG year-round pursuing his passion for exploring the Sawtooths and surrounding ranges on foot or skis. He brings a nationally-recognized expertise in snow science to SMG’s avalanche education program, as well as a strong background in steep skiing with descents in Alaska, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Peru, Patagonia, and Iceland. Chris holds an AIARE Level 3 Avalanche Certification and is an American Avalanche Association Certified Instructor.
