Held in the northern Sawtooth Range, this camp is perfect for skiers and snowboarders who would like to further develop skills in mountaineering and combine backcountry skiing techniques. During the course we will ascend several of the northern Sawtooth Summits, near Williams Peak which is 10,635 ft. This particular alpine location is perfect for developing alpine skills and providing opportunities for ski/board descents.
This time of year provides opportunities for splendid Spring Corn Skiing, or, the chance to do some really great powder skiing in the high alpine bowls if we receive stormy weather. It is an excellent opportunity for skiing and exploring parts of the range which are inaccessible during the winter months!
Our group will be based from the Williams Peak yurt at 8,000ft. positioned perfectly for some great ski mountaineering. From the hut, we will then venture toward the high peaks each day focused on skills while having an alpine objective. During the four days we will focus on skiing in technical alpine terrain and incorporating clinics in snow climbing, the proper use of ice axe, rope, and additional safeguards while ski mountaineering. Mountain weather, route selection and group management, along with evaluating the avalanche and other objective hazards will also be considerations while traveling each day in the terrain.
While skill development and providing an opportunity to focus on some alpine objectives will be the theme of the Camp, we will emphasize the enjoyment of skiing in spectacular alpine terrain and take time to also relax and absorb the incredible ambience of the Sawtooths. This Camp will give the participant the experience in snow climbing and skiing to join ventures to other snowy mountain ranges of the world!
General campware, shelter, food and cookware will be provided by SMG. Participants will need to provide their own personal equipment. Use of technical equipment can be supplied by SMG by reservation-see Equipment List. SMG charges a nominal fee for technical gear use.
